Damage Assessment

Dakota and Hunter gained access by climbing the rock bluffs upriver and scampering down the hill into the home site. While the exact sequence of the structural failure is unclear, the physical impact on the residence is severe:

  • Foundation Failure: The house is no longer supported by its original posts and has dropped 4 feet to the ground.
  • Foundation failure
  • Structural Displacement: The entire structure has shifted, coming to rest 2 feet further toward the back of the property and 3 feet toward the yard.
  • Structural displacement
  • Frame Damage: Both the front and back frames of the house have been deemed unfixable.
  • Frame damage
  • Interior Status: Despite the foundation collapse, no water entered the home, and internal items such as the piano remain undisturbed.

The Way Forward: 2027 Extravaganza

This summer will be spent picking out a new location for a retirement version of the house by clearing the home site, starting on the posts and pad foundation, and fishing.

Summer of '27 is when the heavy lifting begins. Anyone is invited to spend time either in a supervisory role or as a grunt position, constructing the new simple cabin up the hill. We will be reusing many materials from the big house, including the roofing and plywood.

Mark your calendar: Last week of June 2027. More details to come about the Extravaganza.
